It's Pink October! Show Your Support to Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is the month of Breast Cancer Awareness, and it’s well-known by many people internationally. The month where pink becomes the most important color. MR.DIY wants to remind you to wear pink to show your support to Breast Cancer Awareness.
According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women both in the developed and less developed world. Therefore, thousands of organisations work together to spread the word about the disease. There will be social events around you, such as bike rides and runs, which help to bring attention to the cause, or even Pink October Campaigns in retail stores.
Early detection in breast cancer is a simple task which requires a monthly Breast Self-Examination (BSE) routine beginning from the teenage years onwards, whereby the best time is 7-10 days from the first day of your period. And if you are no longer menstruating or having irregular menstruation, choose the same day every month for your BSE. Furthermore, have an annual clinical examination by your doctor, even if you are going through pregnancy as well as an annual mammogram after the age of 40 years.
Regular Breast Self-Examination (BSE) assists women in detecting benign breast lumps and in creating more awareness about breast changes. Even with few resources, women can detect lumps, swelling or painful parts or rashes trough self-exams. They are all attention signs that should require further exams. Do take note that breast cancer is not only found in women, but men as well. As uncommon as it is to hear about it, it does happen.
What Can You Do?
There are plenty of ways to get involved in Breast Cancer Awareness Month. From campaigning to raise awareness and spreading the word about breast cancer prevention, to helping women get access to the breast cancer drugs they need, to funding or volunteering in one of the many organizations that support cancer research, alleviation and treatment.
