MR.DIY embarked on its new corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives for the community with “Upcycle: Walk with Style”, an initiative to upcycle MR.DIY unused white school shoes through arts and crafts for underprivileged children.
Spearheaded by MR.DIY and partnered with Soroptimist International Damansara (SID), these initiatives are based on the “reuse principle” which reduces wastage due to the change of policy in replacing white school shoes with black ones effective in the year 2021.
The initiative was first kicked off on 27 November 2022 at Rumah Aman, Sungai Buloh, Selangor where 70 pairs of MR.DIY white school shoes have been donated to the children of the home. Through upcycling the shoes, the children get to decorate their shoes based on their creativity which later turns into brand-new items for them to own. MR.DIY supplied all the drawing and painting tools such as markers, paint, drawing brushes, accessories, and glitter they need.
The Walk with Style project saw the whole support coming together comprising 10 MRDIY Cares volunteers, teachers of Rumah Aman as well as representatives from SID who join this first project.
One of MRDIY Cares volunteers, Lee Min Huey from the Procurement Department, shared her excitement as this was her first time participating in MR.DIY CSR initiatives since joining this company a few months ago.
“I am very excited to join this Walk with Style project as this is my first time. I believe volunteering can help you not only to make new friends but offering help and connect with the community is something I look up to” said Lee.
MR.DIY hopes this program will encourage the children to tap their inner artists whilst applauding the efforts of MRDIY Cares volunteers and serving as an inspiration to others to embark on similar initiatives.
